β-Muricholic acid (β-MCA) is a natural murine-specific bile acid. In mice, a cholesterol and β-MCA diet (1% β-MCA, 1% cholesterol, 0.5% cholic acid, plus an additional 1% β-MCA) reduced liver HMG-CoA reductase levels and enzymatic activity levels to near zero compared to control mice fed a diet lacking the additional 1% β-MCA. In a lithogenic mouse model, β-MCA administration (2% cholesterol and 0.5% cholic acid plus 0.5% β-MCA) for eight weeks dissolved 100% of pre-existing gallstones.
